Labour Pledges to Be UK’s Most ‘Pro-Business Government’ Ever
Labour’s “number one mission” is to grow the economy by being “more pro-business than Tony Blair”, shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves has said.
The Leeds West MP said she believed her pro-business approach would be “the way to improve living standards and achieve our potential” as a country “by unlocking business investment”. private business”.
“I realize it’s different from the Labor parties that have participated in the last few general elections. But this is the best way to grow the economy and raise living standards.”
The Labor Party has big plans to reform the business sector and boost the UK economy, including becoming the fastest growing economy in the G7.
To achieve this, Reeves said, financial institutions and business groups will be welcomed by politicians and brought into the rooms where big decisions are made.
“We will not grow the economy by having the best civil servants and the best ministers on board,” she said. We will grow the economy by understanding business.”
She also hinted that Labor would consider increasing workers’ rights and The Times reported that an announcement could be made within weeks.
Such employment rights on the negotiating table could include providing employees with rights from the first day of work and ending all zero-hours contracts.
Giving workers such rights has drawn criticism from some business groups as inflexible and potentially counterproductive.
However, Reeves said Labor intends to work with businesses to find solutions that work for everyone.
She said: “We have been out of power for 14 years. We want to make a difference. But we want all our policies to work and that means they must also benefit the businesses and working people.”
“Of course, we will consult. We are doing that adversarially and you can see that in the amount of time we spend on the business.”
“It always makes policy better when you do that.”
She said the consultative and business-friendly approach would be replicated across Whitehall, with ministers working with key leaders to cut bureaucracy in the public sector.
